NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release UK's NHS Selects MMTV to Develop and Run ITV Information ServiceCheltenham, UK - 5 January 2004 - The UK's National Health Service (NHS) has announced the selection of ITV applications developer, MMTV, to develop and run its long-planned, "walled-garden" ITV health information service, NHS Direct Digital TV. MMTV, which is best known for its work on ITV job-hunting service, the Job Channel, will partner with PA Consulting (will provide project management and quality assurance expertise) and Nomensa (specializes in designing and testing interactive services for usability) on the project. According to the NHS, which plans to invest £15 million in the new service over the next 3 years, NHS Direct Digital TV will provide viewers of the UK's DTV platforms with information on NHS services (for example, listings of doctors, dentists and pharmacies); an "encyclopedia" of illnesses and conditions, tests, treatments and operations; "self-care" advice on treating common health problems; tips on healthy living; and information on "hot" health topics. The service, which will also feature images and video clips, will be rolled out on the UK's various DTV platforms in stages, starting this summer, and, according to the NHS, will be widely available by the end of the year. While the service will initially provide only information, the NHS says that it will eventually offer transactional capabilities, allowing viewers, for example, to order repeat prescriptions.
